To celebrate Earth Day 2011, two Broward County Public Schools departments partnered to conduct a video public service announcement (PSA) competition to recognize the achievements of school environmental clubs. Education Technology Services (ETS) and BECON conducted the Acts of Green video PSA competition to give schools an opportunity to showcase environmental practices demonstrated at their sites.

Earlier in the year, students had been asked to create a four-minute video highlighting their school’s environmental accomplishments throughout the 2010/11 school year. That effort led to the PSA contest. Students from 13 elementary, middle and high schools submitted a total of 17 original PSA videos highlighting how their Acts of Green are contributing to saving our planet. BrightStar Credit Union sponsored the competition.

The goal of the project was to educate not only the students, but also the community about the importance of recycling and other environmental issues related to Earth Day. Students were instructed to share their videos with their fellow students, teachers and the community. Viewers were allowed to rate the videos and make comments online. To date, there have been over 18,000 hits and comments from viewers both locally and as far away as Italy. The winning Acts of Green PSAs may be viewed at: (http://www.broward.k12.fl.us/green/EcoContests/vid_winners2011.htm). The winning schools are: Indian Trace Elementary, Sawgrass Springs Middle and Pompano Beach High. Coral Springs High School and Community Adult Resource Education program (CARE), received honorable mentions.

The winning schools will be recognized by their respective Board members at the June 7 Board meeting and the winning PSAs will be highlighted on the District’s website.

BrightStar Credit Union is awarding the winning schools $100 each for a pizza party for their environmental clubs.

ETS and BECON plan to sponsor more competitions that involve the Video-on-Demand technology, allowing for interaction between the schools and the community.
