South Plantation High School's Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration magnet program is hosting an outreach event to teach middle school students about solar and alternative energy. The Junior Solar Sprint Competition will be held on Friday, April 9 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

The cars will be judged on the actual race as well as design, presentation, aerodynamic drag, rolling resistance, and engineering technology. In order to increase community involvement, the hostess of this event chose community volunteers as judges, as well as teachers and students.

The first step of the race took place at SPHS Feb. 17-18. The participating middle schools Attucks (Hollywood), Indian Ridge (Davie), Falcon Cove (Weston) and Parkway (Fort Lauderdale) learned how to design their cars, use environmental resources and gear ratios and the rules and regulations of the race. Schools that did not attend the workshop were also invited to compete in the race. However, they were required to purchase their own supplies.

South Plantation is located at 1300 S.W. 54th Avenue in Plantation on Peters Road between State Road 7 and University Drive.
